Accurate volumetric surveys and quantity checks

Material quantities drive cost. Whether you are paying for muck-away, valuing a stockpile or checking concrete and asphalt quantities, you need numbers you can trust. MatMap carries out independent volumetric surveys that measure exactly how much material has been moved, placed or stored.

Typical applications

  • Cut and fill earthworks volumes against design or existing ground
  • Stockpile measurement for aggregates, soils and recycled materials
  • Concrete pour and slab volume checks
  • Asphalt and surfacing quantity verification
  • Quarry and landfill void and progress surveys
  • Interim valuations and final account support

Our methods

Most volumetric surveys are carried out conventionally, with GNSS and robotic total stations creating accurate surface models before and after works. For large or hazardous stockpiles and earthworks we use terrestrial laser scanning to capture dense surface data quickly and safely, without anyone working on the material.

Surfaces are compared against a baseline survey, a design model or an agreed base level to calculate volumes. Every calculation is backed by drawings and reports that make the numbers transparent and easy to verify.

Volumetric survey deliverables

  • Volume reports with cut, fill and net quantities
  • Isopachyte (depth) plans and colour-coded difference maps
  • Cross-sections and 3D surface models
  • Survey data in DWG, DXF and LandXML for your quantity surveyor

Who we help

We provide volumetric surveys for groundworks contractors, quantity surveyors, construction firms, infrastructure projects and manufacturing and industrial sites that store bulk materials.

Frequently asked questions

For the most accurate earthworks volumes, yes. A pre-works topographical survey gives you a reliable baseline to compare against. If none exists, we can use design levels or historic data.

Stockpile and interim valuation reports are typically issued within one to two working days of the site visit.

Accuracy depends on the stockpile’s shape and the survey density, but surveying with total stations, GNSS or laser scanning typically gives volumes well within the tolerances needed for valuations and stock control.

Yes. We compare existing ground surveys with your design surface to calculate cut, fill and net volumes, supported by isopachyte plans and cross-sections.

We report volumes in cubic metres. If you provide material bulk densities, we can include estimated tonnages in the report.

Yes. For large or unstable stockpiles we use laser scanning from safe positions, so nobody needs to climb or walk on the material.
